WTC Moscow: implementation of the SDGs

6 Apr 2022

In its daily activities World Trade Center Moscow supports the principles of sustainability and good business conduct, which are reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda.

The main approaches to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at WTC Moscow have been formed since their approval by the UN in January 2016. Some of them have been already engrained into the daily activities of WTC Moscow, and are the part of the company’s development strategy.

In response to SDG 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production,” the World Trade Center Moscow team, along with its tenant companies, has been introducing best practices to office space use.

Since 2015, WTC Moscow has been implementing a program to optimize the operation of the building heating and cooling systems, gasoline consumption in WTC’s work. The energy saving programs are also being implemented. Technologies for the collection and treatment of the waste production and consumption have been approved and are in operation. A set of measures is also being implemented to reduce paper consumption. Further, when holding congress events, the reusable structures are to be used.

In 2019, World Trade Center Moscow, in accordance with its mission to create a comfortable business environment introduced separate waste collection, becoming in fact one of the leaders of this movement among the infrastructure objects of such scale.

Also in August 2019, WTC Moscow launched a program to collect used batteries "Give a battery, save the planet." Employees, tenants and guests of the complex can put the used batteries to a special bin and thus save about 1.5 square meters of soil, 400 liters of water or 20 cubic meters of land for each handed over, not thrown away, finger-type battery, the decomposition period of which is about 110 years.

In February 2021, as part of the further implementation of the company's environmentally oriented waste recycling strategy program, special containers for separate waste collection were installed on the territory of WTC Moscow.

In addition, WTC Moscow is actively implementing an environmental program by allocating 12,500 square meters of green space to surround the building complex.

The layout of the WTC territory is carefully thought out, and all elements of landscape design create a special gardening environment, which smooths out the rigid geometry of modern urban structures.

The green zone of WTC Moscow is a unique corner of wildlife just in the center of the capital with a carefully trimmed English lawn, a variety of species of garden trees and ornamental shrubs from around the world, as well as rare varieties of flowers and ornamental plants pleasing the eye of people walking in the park from early spring to late autumn.

Here you can find more than 5 thousand tulips, 250 rose bushes of the most exotic varieties, rare globular maples, several types of lilac (including yellow one), the famous Nedzvetsky apple tree, whose natural habitat is the Tien Shan mountains. Every year many people specially come to take pictures near this apple tree during its flowering period.

On the 15th of October, 2020, World Trade Center of Moscow joined one of the key events of the Year of Memory and Glory, which was held throughout Russia - the International Action "Garden of Memory", by opening in the Krasnaya Presnya Central Park a lilac "Garden of Memory of Veterans of the Great Patriotic War” dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory. This garden and the Lilac Alley of the WTC planted a year earlier in the Krasnaya Presnya Central Park became an excellent continuation of the landscape gardening area connecting the park and World Trade Center.

Tenants and guests can also enjoy the four summer verandas and terraces, green recreations opposite each entrance to the building complex.

Now the gradual transition from "one-year" to "perennial" flower beds continues, the flower beds are constantly being reconstructed.

In August 2020, another beautiful new corner appeared at World Trade Center Moscow - a completely renovated outdoor courtyard that meets all modern trends and requirements. In the process of renovation, extensive restoration work has been carried out to replace engineering systems, beautiful natural materials were selected, which give the site additional attractiveness and atmosphere, make it special. This eco-friendly, light-filled recreation area is the fourth open space in the WTC's shared ecosystem of buildings, each with its own style.

In addition to above mentioned WTC Moscow hosts and holds major international events dedicated to ecology and the environment protection at the WTC’s Congress Center.

Lastly, the World Trade Center Moscow team is taking into account the provisions of the SDGs while planning for the expansion of the building complex.

In response to SDG 17, “Partnership for the Goals,” World Trade Center Moscow pays significant attention to building partnerships with industry associations focused on business and non-profit organizations, public organizations, chambers of commerce, commercial structures, research centers and higher education institutions. As a result of these partnerships, WTC hosts several significant events annually, as well as sponsorship and charitable activities, and strengthens its presence with the media.

For example, on the eve of World Animal Protection Day in October 2021, World Trade Center, together with OZON company and with the support of the RAY charity foundation, held a charity event “Let's Help Shelters Together!”

As part of a charity event, for two weeks, employees and tenants of the complex collected food, medicine, treats and things that would make the stay of animals in shelters at least a little more comfortable.

Thanks to the lively response of caring people, it was possible to collect more than 500 kg of food for dogs and cats, including medical food, which is so needed by weakened and sick animals. Medicines, syringes and droppers, medical care and hygiene products, accessories and much more, without which it is impossible to create decent conditions for keeping animals and facilitate the work of volunteers.

From the 7th to the 14th of February, 2022 World Trade Center Moscow for the second time took part in the all-Russian campaign "Give books with love". The caring attitude of employees, tenants and guests made it possible to collect more than 250 books (from school curriculum, scientific and educational and fiction, as well as detective stories and science fiction for children and adolescents), which were transferred to the Patrovsky rural library of the Samara region.

In addition, in 2017, WTC Moscow joined the Russian environmental and charitable volunteer project “Caps for Good", which is jointly organized by the "Caps for Good" Public Movement and the "Volunteers to Help Orphans" Charitable Foundation.

WTC Moscow on a regular basis transfers plastic caps collected in the course of its activities to specialized collection points. Then a large batch of caps is sent to a plastic recycling plant. The plant weighs the raw material and transfers money for the collected caps directly to the account of the “Volunteers to Help Orphans” Charitable Foundation.

On the 11th – 16th of April, 2022, World Trade Center Moscow is holding the “Caps for Good” campaign, in which everyone can take part.
